116 Years of History
Explore the deep cultural roots and vibrant heritage of Kentucky firsthand.
Stearns Coal and Lumber Company holds great significance as an important milestone in the history of our country. It piques a great interest in minds as to how Justus S. Stearns founded it back in 1902, and as the years have passed, the organization has remained a prominent chapter in the pages of our heritage. With the acquisition of vast areas of timberland in southern Kentucky, the organization unexpectedly discovered coal, and this initiated a profound impact on the surrounding community. With the construction of Stearns town and the development of facilities such as electricity, water, steam heat, and sports facilities, the community flourished, employing over 2,200 people in 18 coal camps, making it the hub of activity. However, the coal mines eventually declined, and by 1976, Stearns Coal & Lumber Co. had divested its holdings, resulting in the area no longer retaining its former glory.
